Fatu iva: Taking it easy, island style

After an uncertain and very bumpy boat trip, another day of perfect sunshine spent around the village.

Much of the 612 strong population lives from artisan crafts. We are taken to watch the production of tapa, cloth produced from plant material, with a lot of bashing into suppleness of the fibres and enough noise to delight the neighbours. Next, the crafty lady makes a traditional umuhei or scented, floral wreath for Gen which she deftly attaches to Gen's hair with a biro. Ingredients are: pineapple dusted in ginger, vetiver, mint, ylang ylang, tiare, myrrh, ginger.

A cheery, young petit ami called Brian leads us on a 20 minute steep climb into the slopes, past coprah farmers chopping coconuts, pigs oinking in cages, chirruping birds in mango trees, then we make a final stop at a whale petroglyph.

Late afternoon is time to join villagers gathering on the harbour beachfront. On the way we meet our driver from yesterday who says the bogged car needed another friend to have a tug, but unfortunately this ripped his bumper off. Nothing a bit of his welding skills couldn't do to repair bumper and friendship. There's always a way, he says philosophically.

We all watch the sun go down on another day of tranquil, unhurried life where la vie est douce.
