Maupiti: Home of the Mythical Baguette Farcie

Goodbye Maupiti and Polynesia. It has been an absolute blast, to say the least.
On our last day on Maupiti, the freight barge which had hit the reef, leaving the island short of groceries, had been repaired and finally made it through the pass to the island. It was a big day with vegetables, baguettes, ham, the lot. Everyone is so cool about mishaps. 'Aita peya peya' as they say, no worries.

Goodbye Polynesia, what an astounding place!

Here in Maupiti, at Snack Mimi on Tereia Beach, I found the elusive baguette farcie which I thought had previously existed only in my own head. The smiling serveuse took my order for omelette and frites, and asked if I wanted bread. Assuming this meant a basket of baguette slices, I said, yes. Forty minutes later of Island time watching the waves, two 50 cm lengths of sliced baguette arrive with omelette in the middle, topped by mountains of chips, lubricated with a river of ketchup. Voila, baguette farcie is alive and well, able to dispatch me into food coma soon after. Aita pe’ape’a or no worries!

(not my photo, I was too shocked to take one).
