Mary Kathleen

Just ten minutes' drive from Corella Dam is the abandoned, uranium mining town of Mary Kathleen. Built in 1958, it numbered 600 houses and a thriving community with schools, beer garden, churches, town square, Olympic sized swimming pool, and more.

The mine closed and all buildings were dismantled, so that now only building slabs and peaceful, tree filled landscapes with herds of browsing cattle remain.

The Pit where the uranium was mined is accessed via a potholed road, well worth the effort to see the gouged mine walls and the stunning turquoise, radioactive waters below.
