Kalkadoon Pub Stopover

En route to Cloncurry, we take a winding, dirt road through pleasant bush country to the remote, 15 inhabitant, once bustling drover community of Kajabbi.

The recently reopened Kalkadoon Pub is a charming place that attracts nearby station jackeroos and jillaroos and a steady trickle of tourists.

Patrons while away the time sipping Bundy and cokes whilst playing pool. Organised events get jumping with yabby racing and raucous station get-togethers.

The pub's name refers to the Indigenous Kalkadoon tribe who resisted incoming colonisers with stone age weapons until they were all but wiped out in the 1860s.

We park up in the paddock at the back where birds thrive, the stars twinkle bright at night, and Kajabbi dreams of the days long gone of huge herds of cattle passing.
