Pilbara Hot Spots

We drove a couple of hours from busy, gritty, industrialised Port Hedland to East Pilbara down to the peace and quiet of beautiful red rockface, spinifex slopes, and reed-lined waterhole of Coppin's Gap.

At dusk, the wind dropped and the heavens put on a display of shooting stars, wheeling Milky Way, and glinting satellites.

The nearest town of Marble Bar is famous for being Australia's hottest town. The highest temperature ever recorded was 49.3C in December 2018. The following year, the town ticked over 24 days straight with highs above 40C.

A series of metal artworks welcomes the visitors along the straight road.

The only pub in town, the Iron Clad Hotel, was built in the 1890s and is listed on the Western Australian register of heritage places. It has no aircon.

When the hotel was up for sale in the 1970s, a calculation was made that the bar sales included 1,350 litres (15x 18 gallon kegs) and 140 bottles and stubbies were sold per week in a population of 500 people.
