Telegraph Pool on Fitzroy River

An enticing dot on the map and a story about Helmut Schmidt, an 89 year old fisherman now expired, who starred in a short doco, took us up a corrugated, sandy track on the Fitzroy River.

Helmut's old shack was pretty much destroyed in the recent floods. The 2010 doco is well worth a look, just avoid dodgy virus stuff on the Internet purporting to lead to the film. We got within 300m of the ruins, but the track wasn't good for our bigger vehicle.

We backtracked to a nice site overlooking the river, raised high above the tidal waters harbouring crocs and sharks.

Early morning wraps the river in thick mist, the far bank is invisible, mysterious plops and splashes on the incoming tide. Light gradually pierces the veil, a ghostly sun appears looking more like the moon. Kookaburras herald a new day.
