Ellendale Lagoon near Fitzroy Crossing

Sometimes you don’t need to go 4wd kms off the beaten track to find paradise, sometimes 2wd, 500m through a gate on a station track off the main blacktop highway does everything you could wish for in a superb freecamp.

Ellendale Lagoon is such a place 90kms past Fitzroy Crossing. No facilities, no dogs, no fires, no rubbish, self-contained. Lovely station owners let us in free out of the goodness of their heart, despite some grubs ignoring the rules.

The lagoon is encircled by trees with scenic, waterside camping spots. Friendly cattle pop in to visit for a carrot munchie.

The birdlife is unbelievable: flocks of cackling, Little Friarbirds, finches, honeyeaters full body dunking their hot bodies in the cool water. Black cockies slowly fly by while corellas screech to each other. Egrets snaffle tiny, white fish.

Wonderful hours passed in nature. What a place!
