Kalgoorlie: Victorian Splendour

What amazes on the drive down Kalgoorlie's sunlit main street is the splendour of the buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s, like the multicoloured York Hotel and the dashing Criterion Hotel.

Just outside the town, we bushcamped at Lake Douglas in 40 degree C heat. Awning out, ice creams, aircon and iced drinks. How spoilt we are!

On a tree stump next to us, the most beautiful Crested Bicycle Dragon (named for their hind leg pedalling when racing away) lapped up the heat and posed for portrait pics. It's also on the endangered list.
