Lazy days at the sculpture lake in the bush

After fitting feisty new reservoir shockies in Merredin and finally finding a super Sparkie in Kalgoorlie to fix a fiendishly faulty inverter cable, we headed north to revisit our favourite bush camp at Lake Ballard.

A cloudy day with intermittent windblown drops of rain gave way to sunshine for a careful walk across the lake on slippy saltcrust to the spindly sculptures and the dramatic dome rock island peppered with trees.

During the day, we spotted sand monitor tracks inspecting the motorhome and the rubbish bin before leading into a large hole under a bush. Was it perhaps the same monitor we had seen here 6 years before?

As the light gave way to stars, a huge, blood red moon heaved itself above the horizon. We later found out to our dismay that this was a partial lunar eclipse, the longest since the 15th century. Being out of comms, we had no knowledge of it. Crushed!

Equally spectacular were the rays of the sun spreading behind the statues and across the sky at dawn.

After an overcast drizzly afternoon, the clouds parted right at the end of the day for a parting gift from this magic place of a stupendous, flaming sunset.
