The shiny, renovated, Spirit of Tasmania ferry took us overnight from Port Melbourne to Devonport. A great bottle of Tassie pinot grigio in the bar was followed by a night in a snazzy 4-berth cabin, evoking memories of crossing from Portsmouth to Le Havre on the English Channel.
Early morning, we spent a few hours zigzagging beyond Launceston via narrow roads, just avoiding a kamikaze truck in a mountain bend. Midway, we stopped for a hike at Weldborough Pass where there were stunning rainforest myrtle trees and tree ferns.
On the East coast, we camped in a lovely beachside site, near St Helens in the Bay of Fires, where the rocky coastline has flaming red lichen turning the rocks on fire in the morning light.
A jaunt inland led to St Columba waterfall where the cascade rushed through lovely rainforest.
The local lizards took Robert's proffered hand as an invitation to nibble fingers!
