Quobba Point and Red Bluff

North of Carnarvon we headed for the beautiful beachscape and dunes of Quobba Point.
En route we passed the huge expanse of the dried salt lake, Lake MacLeod.

The lighthouse overlooks the beach bushcamp and amazing blowholes that roar and spout jets of water some 20m into the air.

Tucked behind the dunes, we camped out of the wind. Point Quobba was wonderfully wild, with flocks of migrating birds, reefs and shallows, and old beach shelters.

At Bullara station we had previously noticed rustling of the bin bag during the night. Eek, we have a mouse hitchhiker on board and nesting in the air vent! On arrival at Red Bluff, 65kms north of Quobba via corrugated sandy road, I discovered we had another stowaway: a very cute gecko hanging out inside in the campchair. This is in addition to various spiders.

Red Bluff is even wilder than Quobba - on arrival we met two ospreys on the dirt road and later saw their giant nest on top of a phone mast. We bushcamped ten metres from the surf and were grateful for some cooling winds - the week before temperatures had been around 45 degrees C.
