We spend 10 days camped at Mareeba Bush Stays, embedded in nature with a fabulous view of the lily-covered dam and the constant company of darters, cormorants, cuckoos, rosellas, bush curlews, and wallabies.
We have the entire dam to ourselves, just one distant neighbour for a couple of days. So much peace, quiet, sunshine, and the pleasure of lunch, happy hour, and dawn chorus, the full extent of our world.
The night air, cool and still, embraces the dark lake with its gurgles and pops of nightlife. Above, the stars stipple the limits of our knowledge. How small we are.
