En route to the Simpson Desert, we traversed 100s of outback kms with the occasional Dad emu and his progeny, a bearded dragon doing pressups on the whiteline, and communities of fairy martins nesting with sparrows in Cunnamulla.

Getting blasé with bearded dragons, we spotted another one posing in the middle of the road, but Gen stopped anyway to stand on the road and line up for a portrait.

Wham! A beautiful, brown falcon flashed over her head to land on a branch opposite with a small, silver snake in its beak. It ripped apart its prey, then shot across to harass the dragon which raised itself in threat posture, jaws wide open, and changed its body colour to an inky black. The falcon attacked multiple times, the dragon jinked and swerved to avoid the outstretched talons, but did not run. Suddenly, the falcon broke off the attack, possibly deciding dragon main course after snake starter was off the menu, and flew off. Only then, did the dragon run like the wind from the centre of the road. What a show, we were gobsmacked!
