The camp is looked after by a lovely big-hearted guy called Dave Berry who is an old drover with a long wispy beard, a twinkle in one eye, and a false one in the other.
Dave credited Joe with being the best in the Bush. Famed for his bush skills, his ability to throw a bull on his own was legendary, as was his wariness of being caught by the stock squad.
Once he was asked to sign on by a station. The head stockman tells him to cut wood, cook damper and pudding, do some fencing next day. As an afterthought, because he doesn't believe stories about Joe's bull throwing prowess, he says sarcastically to castrate the three, huge bulls in the adjacent paddock. The rest of the ringers go out mustering, leaving Joe to his work, then come back late in the evening. The next morning the head stockman tells Joe he's done well with the jobs and slyly asks how he got on with the bulls. Joe says he's castrated them all. The dumbfounded stockman rushes off to check and is distraught to find the prize breeding bulls bleeding in the paddock.
When the station owner found out, the head stockman lost his job which was handed to Joe.
