Cape Tribulation Camping

A run of fine weather prompted us to drive North from Cairns to the Daintree forest, millions of years old, a dazzling cornucopia of lush foliage, myriad tropical flora and the humid, earthy scent of leaf litter.

It's April 1st, the glorious day Gen left France 38 years ago to seek her fortune and an exciting life in the wide world.

A surprise was the now renovated camp site on the first day of the season with more power and water points, plus Internet. The price has doubled, so maybe this is the last time we stay in these gorgeous sites, recessed in the forest with separate access to the magnificent beach, so spectacular at sunrise.

During the day, we are visited by a fabulous lace monitor, orange-footed scrub fowl, and the brush turkeys picking through leaf litter.

A stroll down the beach leads to magnificent trees spreading branches over the sand, whilst a huge fig tree inside the forest must surely contain dreaming possums.

Around the bend is the very scenic Cooper Creek. Crocs are present there, so we made it snappy.

As the tide recedes, I pull up a chair in the shade and gentle breeze on the beach and watch the slow procession of shipping across the horizon.

Late in the afternoon we pick up a luscious Dingo pizza, freshly baked in the wood-fired oven, to take back to consume al fresco with chilled wine at our forest hideaway.
