Parry Creek Farm: Lazy Days

Just 8km along a dirt road outside Wyndham, we stayed at this lovely, rural farm campsite, amongst boabs and mango trees. The local billabong filled with water lilies apparently also had a resident saltie or two.

We socialised at the pool, popped in one night for a pizza from the woodfired oven, another night for bucket of prawns with chilled sav blanc. At any time of the day, we could get mango smoothies or home made mango cheesecakes. They also served tea and scones and had an a la carte restaurant.

Sunsets were spectacular serenaded by kookaburras.

Morning and afternoon we took the long walk along the picturesque lagoon to look for birds. We spotted ibises, pheasant coucal, finches, honeyeaters, and more.

Absolute highlight was a pair of duelling male Black Whipsnakes which I happened to hear thrashing in the undergrowth. Amazing. Gen got pics almost at eye-level because the snakes were rearing up and Gen is short! We later learnt that they measure between 1.2 and 1.5m. Not only are they venomous but they also are one of the fastest snakes in Australia.

Gen uploaded the series of photos to an Australia native wildlife Facebook page and was pleased to get nearly 800 likes. The post was shared multiple times to various herpetology groups, it even went to Arizona and New Mexico! Apparently, there are few images available that recorded a duel of that species.
