So we spent a great day at Australia Zoo, the centre of activity to keep his legacy and memory fresh.
Run by Terri his wife, and his children Bindi and Robert, the zoo runs a pumped up midday wildlife show in the Crocoseum stadium that has the pep and zing of the man himself.
It's great to see cool videos of Steve on a giant screen inviting us to come and join him; and watch a massive croc getting his chicken fix.
We saw a Horned Iguana reclining in the sunshine.
In the nocturnal house, a highlight was a lovely Woma Python, a rarity locally, being reared to repopulate their habitat.
The Black Tiger Snake from Tasmania packs a venomous bite.
