Eight months, 31,000kms, one burst tyre, one chipped and patched windscreen, one dead ABS sensor, one smashed air vent, one dead charger, one repaired aircon, roughly 220 bottles of wine, and a thousand brilliant memories are the final tally for the Big Lap.
It has to be right up there as one of the top highlights of our lives. From rainsoaked Queensland; to the drought-hit Outback; down to the chilly, glowing Red Centre; up to the steamy Northern Territory and the vast, vast, open spaces of the Kimberley, and the Pilbara in WA; then across the Nullarbor to the wild forests of Tasmania; and boomeranging back up to Sydney.
Somewhere en route, Robert's watch died...but it was barely noticed as we lived day to day from sunup to sundown. Gen shot 1000s of photos, trying for insects, birds, salt lakes, sunrises, sunsets, auroras, nightshots, roadtrains, and all the things that brightened our lives with our motto: every day something new.
Our map shows our route which we followed anti-clockwise with countless detours, twists and turns to see what lay down the next backroad.
Our last day of the trip, we drove back to Dore Place, Mount Annan, in southwest Sydney...back to give ourselves a High Five at the exact spot where we had left in May. We had officially looped the loop. Our good friends and ex-neighbours, Hans and Thea, welcomed us back with a slapup meal and we had a few stories to chuckle about!
