Canberra - Capital Trip

Leaving the state of Victoria, we climbed and climbed for half a day up and over Mt Kosciusko National Park before going via Jindabyne to Canberra.

The mountain scenery suddenly dived into a narrow valley with giant pipes from a hydroelectric scheme diving dramatically down the hillside.

En route we had a bush picnic close to a heritage trestle bridge.

Then we passed Lake Hume, with its drowned trees poking out in the middle.

First stop in Canberra was a great spider exhibition with live exhibits and statistics that showed no-one had died from a spider bite for several years - sharks, crocs and motor cars are the Aussie predators to look out for! Also on display was amazing video footage of the peacock spider doing its shimmy, shimmy, salsa-like mating dance. See if you can shimmy like this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=d_yYC5r8xMI

On our wander through Canberra, which bears a striking resemblance in its monumental layout to Brasilia, we stumbled across the old Commonwealth Building fronted by an Aboriginal sovereignty camp, complete with First Embassy.

A reconciliation exhibit continued the Aboriginal theme with a beautiful representation of the bowerbird's bower.
