Karumba
On the long drive via Normanton to Karumba, we
encountered single strip asphalt road. If vehicles crossed, they had to keep
half the vehicle on the dirt at the side. We met several Utes towing pony
trailers, one of which sent a bunch of rocket propelled stones into our
windscreen which sustained chip and crack just below the windscreen
wiper.
Cattle on the road need careful attention, just in case they decide to do some stampeding:
Most major repairs and fixes in the Gulf country are for minor items only; for anything else, the populace has to get things done in Mt Isa or Cairns. The lady at the garage in Normanton said nobody replaced windscreens, but she sold me a DIY repair kit which looks like holding until Mt Isa.

Normanton has renovated its statue of a massive 8.5
metre saltie named Krys after the Polish lady croc hunter who shot him.
Then it was time to beat a hasty retreat to the Purple Pub, a vivid splash of technicolour in the dusty town.
The campsite in Karumba was firmly in the hands of the fishing crowd. Mostly beer bellied elderly men, enjoyed a camaraderie of boats, trailers, caravans and happy hours recounting tales of swivels and treble hooks, Barras and Spanish mackerel, tuna and bream.

Our forwarded post took its stately time to arrive
at Karumba post office with its delivery only three times a week. We had to
wait four days to get it and was reminiscent of waiting for the next Cobb &
Co. mail coach.
No matter, we slowed to Gulf country pace, and headed to
Karumba Point for a chilled bottle of white wine and magnificent seafood
platter devoured as the sun sank below the horizon. In the pic you will see delicious 'bugs', like a cross between lobster and prawn, small and yummy.
Gen triumphed with her first time lapse video sunset which includes a cast of beach strollers and birds with millisecond roles.

During the day, we cruised the wetlands and
patrolled the golf course which had a massive membership of wallabies tending
the greens. Brolgas took care of the birdies.
To finish off the day at Karumba Point, Ash's Barra Fish and Chips Special, advertised as the World's Best, couldn't be beaten:
