From Albany, we dodged bushfires to stay at the friendly, protected beach with its sunbathers and frisky, crab-obsessed terriers in Augusta.
The next day, we visited nearby Skippy Rock with wild, surf outcrops backed by lots of lunar-looking, petrified trunks of an ancient plant forest on the hillside.
We stayed at Hamelin Bay, no phone, no internet, beside the last remnants of the 1895 jetty where sociable black rays surfed in the waves, hoping for fish scraps.
