Return to Opal Country: White Cliffs

A short drive from Wilcannia is the opal mining village of White Cliffs.

We arrived on a sleepy Saturday when the village centre crossroads were receiving a fresh coat of bitumen.

The heritage drive took us round the heavily pockmarked diggings, including a dunny with the sign Somebody's Toilet, hundreds of heaps of spoil, and dugout homes.
