Dazzling nature displays : FNQ struts its beauty

Our next FNQ adventure took us deep into rainforest on the Atherton Tablelands close to Yungaburra. The wooden, Bali-style cottage we stayed at is one of four, beautifully thought through with deck to view the major wildlife drawcards.

Everything inside is snugly self contained.

The rainforest wraps around the deck where the wonderful birds come to feast on our dishes of mealworm wrigglies and fruit salad.

The owners have spent the last 20 years offering bird treats and the avian population comes readily to hand.

We spend two perfect days with the birds, musk rat kangaroos and pademelons. Bridled, Lewin's, and Macleay's Honeyeaters jostle with robins, a smartly spotted catbird, and a jaunty Eastern Whipbird.

Star of the show is the male Victoria's Riflebird which rustles its wings on arrival, then hops onto a high post and looks for females. When she appears, he puffs out his chest, raises himself ramrod straight showing off his wide open, bright yellow gape. Stretching and fanning his wings in a dramatic umbrella shape, this member of the bird of paradise family bobs and bounces in a stunning dance performed in silence.

Gen and I are wowed speechless by the dazzling performance which we had longed to see, not daring to believe we would actually see it happen.
