Mt Surprise - Too Good Not to Revisit

Dodging heavy rain in Cairns, we took off again for six hours of driving to get to Cumberland Chimney, a historic relic of the gold mining days when the place and its lake were busy with goldhunters at the crushing plant contracted to surrounding mines to crush gold bearing ore. Now, the site is a peaceful spot to enjoy the bush and spot birds.

Sometimes, the Savannah Way narrows down to a mere ribbon road with dodgy hard shoulders, a mandatory refuge from road trains and other vehicles. Just mind flying stones, as we know by experience. Cracked windscreen...

Water level was very low in the Einasleigh River, while the dirt road leading to Einasleigh village was closed. It was a minor disappointment as we had planned to attempt to get there despite the corrugations but it will be for another time.

Next morning we headed back to Mt Surprise to relax in the Bedrock Campsite beside the Cairns-Forsayth Railway Line famous for the tourist train, the Savannahlander. Mt Surprise is a tiny bush village where we put our feet up and played Boggle, napped, swam in the pool, and went bugging at night.
