Lazy Days on the Daintree River

After a few days at home, we slip away to stay in Daintree Village next to the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest rainforest in the world.

It's low season, so we have the campsite to ourselves and socialise with the camp hosts who are bird enthusiasts.

Next day we get up bright and early to take a boat trip on the Daintree River with David White in White Ibis, an electric boat. It was high tide and recent flooding meant the croc activity was subdued because the females were guarding their secret nest sites. We enjoyed the early morning mist on the river and then glided into dense mangrove waterways to float in the magic world.

As an interlude between boat trips, we returned to Daintree Village and tucked into a full breakfast with eggs, bacon, toast, and a native coriander plus tropical fruits.

As the heat of the day was waning, we joined another Daintree River boat trip with David in Solar Whisper Crocodiles and Wildlife Cruise.

This time, it was low tide, so we got to see small crocs, kingfishers, crabs, mudhoppers, snakes, frogs nesting sunbird and honeyeater, a Brahminy kite and a striated heron.

To finish the weekend, we popped in next day to see the nesting Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfishers at Kingfisher Park in Julatten. Braving the mozzies, we waited patiently in the forest and were rewarded with a view of the kingfishers close to their termite mound nest.
