Easter at Porcupine Gorge

After the drenching of Tropical Cyclone Nora passing close past Cape York, we headed off in sunshine some 10 hours south west of Cairns to Porcupine Gorge near Hughenden.

The campsite overlooked the rim of the canyon and had lovely views of savannah country.

In the morning, we hiked down to the canyon bed where the river flowed strongly along colourful flat rocks.

Above us towered the Pyramid rock formation.

At 10am the sun was strong, so we took a cooling dip in the the side races of the river.

In the evening, a wonderful, glowing full moon lit up the sky and peeped through the open back doors of the campervan.

The night sky was a joy to watch as well. Stars glistened in the peaceful night.

We broke the long drive home with a stay at Greenvale in a campsite with chickens pecking insects off our front bumper, guinea fowl calling, bowerbirds dropping in, and cheeky blue-faced honeyeaters hopping in the trees above.
