Off to Borneo

The recent move to Cairns meant we had to rejig our Borneo trip booked long before, so we went via Sydney, stayed the night at the airport, then caught the Kuala Lumpur flight for a long eight hours. The delayed connection to Kota Kinabalu got us to the hotel there after 1am.

First impressions are that this is a place with a friendly vibe. Breakfast at the Klagan Hotel is a knockout bonanza of dishes on the rooftop with a view over the waterfront. Everyone smiles, likes being in photos.

We took a stroll through the markets where knockoff Dunhill belts were eagerly pressed on me.

Stopped for a Starbucks first, nitro cold brew pressed coffee that looked and tasted like Guinness.

The afternoon trip to the Muzium Sabah was great look at the indigenous tribal cultures, lots of parallels with the Amazon region.

It's holiday time, so knocked back a couple of excellent margaritas in the bar in the evening.

We made sure we remembered the hotel notice not to bring any rotten smelling durian into our room - otherwise 1000 Malaysian Ringgit fine and my name would be in bad odour.
