Hanging with Ray and the Rays in Bendalong

Bendalong is 1.5 hrs south of Kiama and offers a wonderful couple of sandy beaches, one of which is famed for stingrays that come to the water's edge to be fed by hand.

Not sure about the treats that rays like, we popped into a servo in Nowra where we bought frozen squid, much to the amusement of the servo owner who said seagulls nick most of the food he brings to the seaside.

Once at the beach, we wade out to see our lunch guests. The rays come in all sizes from dinner tray to huge, gentle monsters slowly flapping to suck your toes before hoovering my proffered squid.

Also keen to get between a ray and its squid are several seagulls who joyfully swoop when I throw a squid into the water before realising rays are bottom feeders, so unlikely to come to the surface.

Absolutely delightful, being so close to these gentle giants. Just don't tease them into lashing with their tail. The day was made when the guy next to me photographing a ray turned out to be called Ray.
