An inventive bloke in Queensland had set up a business in the bush community of Mudgeeraba, inland from the Gold Coast, making magnetic bug screens for campervans. I rang him to enquire about a delay in shipping and to see why it had taken so long. "That's quite a story", he said.
He explained that the community is small, remote and surrounded by wooded valleys. The previous couple of weeks there had been a major bushfire which had covered the area in smoke and raged for days, shutting down access to the outside. When the fire was finally put out, bushwalkers stumbled on the probable cause of the blaze. They found a car that had been set on fire...and inside the car was a charred body.
Missing person files were searched, the police combed the area, and finally traced the corpse's identity to that of a Saudi prince who had fallen in with notorious Asian gangsters on the Gold Coast.
The theory was that they had driven him out to the bushland, shot him, and set fire to the car, thereby setting in motion the chain of events that delayed my mosquito nets
