The bustard is very proud, haughty and Spanish-looking; immensely vain and ready to strut his feathers at the slightest affront...they are also known as the fartbird. It is strange to be on the Spanish steppes at dawn and to hear a ripple of wet farts breaking out all around. Well, there were five of us taking photos in different hides...for fifteen hours...so I still need to work out that it really was the bustards

...and a good few sheep, some of whom I saw dead and being eaten by dozens of vultures.
