Raja Ampat - Day 2

A day excursion took us to Piaynemo Island, the jewel of Raja Ampat. We snorkelled in three different locations. The reef itself was disappointing but nice fish were to be seen - neither of us are beach or snorkelling fanatics - nonetheless it was a great day of varied things to do.

After torrential, tropical downpours the day and night before, the weather today was absolutely brilliant. The boat zipped along on the glassy calm water with two engines, a total of 260hp, our group of 6 tourists, and a duo of Papuan crew with big smiles and a couple of words of English between them.

Puffs of cloud dotted the perfect blue sky, like artillery bursts of smoke. We passed several resorts and homestays with their wooden houses built on stilts over the island shoreline backed by lush forests. One crew member kept watch at the front to dodge the occasional log and floating rubbish.

After a couple of snorkel stops, we docked at Pianeymo island and climbed the 130 steps to the top for a stunning view over the karst limestone islets.

Next stop we misunderstood to be Arborek village, so readily hopped out. Boy, were we wrong! This was a very steep, vertical ascent of a cliff path to a lookout - more like a rock climb, and tested Gen's knees to the max.

By the time we got to Arborek village, we were too puffed to snorkel again, so were happy to watch the remains of our lunch being ingested by swarms of colourful fish around the jetty.

Super fun on the way back was a meeting with a pod of spinner dolphins. A fitting end to a great day out.
