Entranced by Robin Falls

From Adelaide River, a very windy, bumpy, scenic detour from the main road undulates to the popular bushcamp of Robin Falls.

Arriving first thing in the morning, we just beat a caravan to the prime campspot fronting the shallow, sandy creek flowing slowly from the falls along its course lined with lush, cool monsoon forest.

What a delightful site to rest: shaded, breezy, campfire friendly, with a bonanza of birdlife.

Multiple species of flycatcher nervously flitted from branch to branch, kookaburras laughed hysterically, an azure kingfisher hunched to attention; and a brown goshawk perched right next to us on watch for prey which it divebombed all day with scant success apart from a hapless Jesus lizard caught by the leg. Jeez, sorry!

In the late afternoon the real theatre began when the ibis duo patrolled the bank of the creek, followed to the inch by a very attentive egret snaffling escaping prey. This cast of players was in turn harassed by the indignant goshawk intent on claiming his rightful meal.

On the second day, we spent the early afternoon walking the 2kms to the falls. From the carpark, the trail followed beside the gurgling, tannin-tinged creek, making us rockhop over stone blocks and fallen trees until we reached the plunge pools below the steep falls.

The morning of the final day, a big roo nervously hopped to the edge of the creek for a drink, suddenly saw us, then plunged into the water and scrambled up the bank on the other side.

What a fabulous place to camp for free in the Bush surrounded by entrancing wildlife.
