On the Wallaby

A cute highlight of our Fly Creek housesit on a bushblock was taking care of Agile Wallaby joeys, Ash and Fred. Feeding bottles of special formula three times a day, changing pillowcase pouches, and chopping mountains of sweet potatoes, kept us on our toes.

Despite us being prepared to buy medium crickets aplenty, the owner's bearded dragon, Russ, spent all his time brumating (hibernating) under a rock.

Rocko, an 11-year old charming colliexkelpiexstaffie mix, kept us company from early morning until bedtime. He let us know a lot when he wanted attention, a belly rub, dinner, and a game of ball. Totally unfazed by the wallabies, he let them nibble his coat.

Water came from a bore piped into a tank. To find out how low the tank was, we simply knocked on the side to know. If we misjudged, the tank overflowed to briefly flood the wallaby enclosure. The lawn and pot plants needed irrigation every two days, much to the delight of lovely green frogs. We found one in the dog's bowl.

On 35 degree days, the breeze on the deck kept us cool before we had happy hour with the light scent of backburning, and the evening chorus of friarbirds. Magic

New to us was the streaming TV, so we binged on famous Australian films, like Red Dog True Blue, The Tracker and Goldstone.
