This Will Do: Dundee Beach and Litchfield Park

From Marrakai, we drove West to the delights of Dundee Beach, a quiet (except at weekends when Darwinites and dirtbikes party) spot on the coastline with a laidback pub, boat ramp, and a caravan park.

Sunset was spectacular with vivid colours glowing along the waterfront.

A boat parked outside the pub summed it up nicely – This Will Do.

Birdlife in the caravan park was intriguing too with performing corellas twirling upside down and canoodling.

We took the backroads into Litchfield Park via spectacular mounds built by Magnetic Termites and Cathedral Termites. The former live only on flood plains and align to the earth’s magnetic field; the latter build giant cathedrals and only live on soils that do not flood in the Wet.

A perfect campsite close by Florence Falls gave us a chance to take a dip in the plunge pool – cool and refreshing.

In the morning, a small flock of crimson finches stole the show with a flash of technicolour.

Meanwhile, during the night, ants had detected our groundmat obstructing their nest entrance, so they sharpened their pincers and neatly won the day with some surgical precision.
