Fogg Dam Wildlife Bonanza

After the errands were done in Darwin, we revisited Fogg Dam out on a floodplain by the Adelaide River. We spent all day just taking in the magnificent wildlife, listening to the distant honking of magpie geese on the plain, and watching the plumes of backburning smoke on the horizon. As the State borders are still closed due to the pandemic, we had the whole place to ourselves for two days.

From the paperbark woods came the calls of doves and orioles, whilst freshie crocodiles drifted and jacanas highstepped in the lily covered expanses of water.

A bush cuckoo guzzled caterpillars; a magnificent white-bellied sea eagle launched from a dead tree; wallabies grazed; and even wild buffaloes turned up to join the party.

A myriad of smaller birds melodiously called and foraged in the trees.

We were back at dawn the next day to catch flights of magpie geese, ibises, herons and egrets in the changing colours of sunrise.
