Rainbow Valley Dreaming

Just 22km away on a sandy dirt road off the Stuart Highway outside Alice Springs, is the majestic rock formation of Rainbow Valley soaring above claypans that had just filled with rain. A glorious mixture of iron-red, purplish, and searing white rockfaces commands the eye.

Avoiding the midday heat, we took walks in the late afternoon and early morning to explore the landscape. Just us in the peace and quiet of the desert.

We received an enthusiastic reception from the large local fly population. Certainly, I can't say there were no flies on me.

Mushroom Rock, where nature had chiselled wild surface features, also presented delicate mud and grass nests of fairy martins on its cave ceilings.

Rambling round the claypans, we followed a myriad of tiny footprints in the sand, eventually coming across an industrious beetle scaling a sand dune. The Reebok visitor's footprints were self-identifying.
