Elim Beach magic

A stop for a day to juice up the batteries in Cooktown, leaves us ready to proceed next day to Elim Beach owned by Eddie, a 94 year old Aboriginal.

On our first attempt with our 2wd ford transit, a year ago, we had to turn back at a deep creek, but this time with the 4wd Coaster we sailed over dips and corrugations as the road led past hills of bright white silica sand.

The beach and campground are spectacular. We have a lucky break and get a beachside site under shady paperbarks.

The beach is wild, fringed by mangroves, intersected by numerous small, freshwater creeks.

To the North is a view of Coloured Sands, to the South is the sharp outline of Cape Bedford.

The sea takes on all shades of blue, green and turquoise. Another stunning Australian gem.

In the evening, quadbikes are parked, beers are cracked open and travellers assemble around the blazing campfire.

Some campers try their luck with their fishing rods at high tide.
