Emu Creek Station

A couple of hours outside Cairns, just past Dimbulah on the Atherton Tablelands, is a rough dirt track leading through classic bush and termite mounds to Emu Creek Station.

We are near the end of the Dry, so there are just a few waterholes along the broad, sandy creek where all kinds of birds forage in the flowering eucalypts and paperbark trees.

An atmosphere of peace prevails with cool breezes and the calls of the birds - time to watch the blue-faced honeyeaters, parrots, little friarbirds, and kookaburras, read a bush story or take a nap.

In the evening, we merge into darkness with moon, stars and light-painted trees making perfect photo material.

Next day we explore rutted bush tracks; and the dwindling waterholes, where we spot ibises catching frogs, and pied cormorants bobbing in the water or lounging with their wings outstretched to dry in the morning sun.

We return via the station with its yards and their termite-encrusted rails, back down the five kms of beautiful bush, to the blacktop and Cairns.
