Birds on Barron

Just an hour's drive up the steep Kuranda Range and onto the Tablelands greenery is the lovely farm called Birds on Barron at Biboohra, close to Mareeba. Here there is plenty of room to camp freestyle on 115 acres, including orchard and riverside sites. The weekend flows at the pace of the Barron River.

Robert makes damper in the camp oven over the campfire - no pic because he burnt its bottom...not enough flour...but the rest was sooo yummy. Gen also made a lovely healthy salad.

Waking up in the morning, we find the surrounding bushland shrouded in thick morning mist, muting all colours.

Gen chased insects and birds in the bushes - mannakins, finches, fairywrens, bee-eaters, noisy friarbirds and a pardalote. We were amazed to witness a magpie lark mobbing an ibis. Gutsy fellow!

The owners told us about special campsites in a restricted area, so we booked for the next weekend when we parked up in a wonderful site close to the river in total peace and quiet.

By coincidence, we met two couples travelling in Toyota Coaster motorhomes, a vehicle we are interested in, so we popped over to their campsite to inspect all the interior fitouts and gadgets.

Back at our riverside retreat, Gen excelled with a Naked Lunch platter prepared in fine detail.

Our evening campfire was a great success using big branches which produced plenty of embers to cook BBQ beef ribs in the camp oven.

As night fell, the stars came out and Gen turned to astro photography. How relaxing: surrounded by stars, gazing at the glowing embers, listening to the gurgling of the river, and the crickets chirruping.
