Bowra is an old cattle station that is now a Mecca for birdwatchers. We camped by a lagoon but poor weather kept us indoors. Ominous black clouds suddenly parted to produce a beautiful rainbow above the van.
We meet Marilyn, in her 70s. She’s been travelling Australia on her own for 15 years with her 4wd tug and caravan. She spends her year moving from wildlife spot to wildlife spot, setting up camp for weeks on end, drawing power from solar panels, and chatting with all and sundry, before returning for summer sojourn in Tasmania before it turns cold, then she is off again northwards. Marilyn has broken the tow hitch and lost the caravan down the road a few times. She stays in old gravel pits, avoids trucker areas – sets up her satellite dish to watch telly and follows the sun and the birds to guide her day.
