An Easter break to Queensland was the perfect opportunity to think through the next steps after Gen resigned from the stress and chaos of her banking contract and Robert had newly resigned from his micromanagement saga with a data analytics company.
A late night flight to Cairns was followed by a crossing on the Hi Speed Cat the next day to Fitzroy Island. The general mood on board the ferry was happy, and became even happier when one of the crew did hilarious miming to the safety video:
The island had it all: coral beaches, clear waters, rainforest; Gen even saw a shark next to the beach early in the morning.
The resort hotel gave us a super suite, complete with kitchen and a fridge with icetrays for our illicit byo wine - as a licensed island, no byo alcohol requested. Prior to getting into the room, we waited on the patio and met Gus, the resident sand monitor padding around with sharp-clawed feet on the prowl.
This was a break to recover from our various stresses, so Foxy's Bar, in shady rainforest overlooking the beach, proved our popular hangout. As the sun went down, and the lights on the boats in the bay twinkled, we sighed relief as we sipped on our frosted margaritas accompanied by a bucket of prawns.
Next day in the early morning, the gentle swooshing sound of the waves was replaced for half an hour by the patter of gentle rain. Out on the bay, rainbows appeared to set a magical scene.
We followed the Secret Garden trail to look for bugs. I did the spotting and Gen captured photos of orb spiders, weevils, caterpillars and major's skinks.
Lazy days turned to twilight, the sun rose and fell, margaritas were shaken and we barely stirred until it was time to take the afternoon Raging Thunder ferry back to the world.
